If you wish to stay in Bulgaria for longer than 90 days (citizens of the E.U.,
the European Economic Community (EEC), Canada, the USA, Switzerland or Israel)
or 60 days (for other countries) or want to live in Bulgaria permanently you
will first need to apply for a long stay visa also known as a type D visa. The
type d visa costs around $25 for American Citizens and around £44 for UK
citizens. A type D visa can be applied for online at the Bulgarian embassy
website in the UK or USA. Once you have received your long term visa you will be entitle to stay in Bulgaria for up to six months and will now be able to apply for residency. Applications for residency are made to the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs, you have two choices of application either for temporary residence of up to one year or permanent residence. Temporary Residence If you are working and applying for temporary residence in Bulgaria you will need to prove that you can support yourself financially, have a valid Bulgarian work permit or a guaranteed work contract, somewhere to live and have full private medical insurance. You will also need to prove that you are paying regular social contributions. Usually your employer will help you to apply and with filling out the necessary forms. Retired people seeking a temporary residence permit in Bulgaria will just need to prove that they have financial security, a bank account in Bulgaria and that they are resident. Permanent Residence Unless you are married to a Bulgarian citizen or your parents are of Bulgarian descent you will need to keep applying for temporary residence for 5 years before being allowed to apply for a permanent residency permit.
