About Bulgaria
St George's Rotunda in SofiaOne of the oldest countries in Europe Bulgaria is situated in the heart of the Balkans in southeast Europe. Bulgaria is a country of dramatic and diverse landscapes offering beautiful scenery from Alpine slopes to Black sea coastlines.

Bulgaria is a relatively small country measuring just 110 993 sq km and with a population of around 7,640,238 people. The Bulgarian capital and its largest city is Sofia which is located in western Bulgaria at the foot of the Massif Vitosha mountain.

Sofia the Bulgarian Capital
Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe and houses some the countries most beautiful architecture. Although the current city is built on Roman foundations Sofia dates back even further with archaeological digs uncovering traces of civilisation dating back to more than 7000 years.

Language and Alphabet
The official language of Bulgaria is Bulgarian, predominantly Slavic it uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

Religions
The main religion in Bulgaria is Christian with many Bulgarians having some association with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, other religions include Islam and Roman Catholicism.

Currency
The currency of Bulgaria is the Lev taken from the Bulgarian word for lion, the lev is divided in to stotinka with 100 stotinki being one lev.
